Purpose

The Kingston English Language Training Schemes are designed for students whose first language is not English. The purpose of these training schemes is to provide the essential skills and knowledge required to function in an English language community, with specific reference to the Aotearoa New Zealand community. The training schemes aim to encompass English language learners living permanently or temporarily in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The suite of five training schemes introduces students to theoretical knowledge of English and provides practical learning components for both the receptive language skills of listening and reading and the productive language skills of speaking and writing. The language system variables of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are taught through the four language skills.

The target student for the training schemes is international students who hold a visitor visa, student visa or work visa and want to improve their English for social, travel, work or further education purposes. Students will not be studying for the purposes of gaining a formal language qualification with Kingston. However, the level 4 exam preparation class will provide students with the skills and knowledge to take the IELTS language proficiency test.
